Mia learns a lot about life from the "Weeklies," the people who live in the motel. They have their own hardships, but also become like family to Mia and her parents. Mia is determined to get her family out of poverty by winning a contest where they could own their own motel. All she has to do is write an essay. Can Mia, whose first language is not English, win a contest with an essay? Her mother is not so sure.
This is a timely book with many relevant themes, such as racism, immigration, stereotyping and the struggles of the people around us. Along with the reader, Mia learns to empathize with others and not give up on her goals, even when they seem unachievable. If you want to read a great book, check out Front Desk by Kelly Yang on the Libby app from the public library. Also, be sure to go to Kelly Yang's Instagram page for her writing lessons. I am very excited for the continuation of Mia's story in the upcoming book Three Keys. We will be sure to have it in our library. Happy reading!
